We have seen it time and time again, contractors looking to cut corners in order to save a buck.  The way we see it, if someone is constantly looking to save a buck, they are either 100% untrustworthy or they have not a clue what they are doing; either way you want to stay far away from contractors like this.  It's always a good idea to do a little background check on your contractors by asking for their client list, maybe some references or even the brand of products they intend to use on your project.  A reputable company is more likely to be trustworthy, use top of the line products, and do things the right way.
